The open letter to the Greek authorities was signed by dozens of archaeologists. They demand to cancel the reconstruction of the Acropolis, which could destroy the unique architectural monument, BB.LV reports.
The Greek Ministry of Culture has planned a major overhaul of the Acropolis to ensure the comfort of tourists. The plans include the reconstruction of the staircase and the main entrance built in the 1st century AD. The ministry says the changes will bring back the landmarks “monumentality and authenticity.”
However, experts around the world believe that the planned work to change the appearance of the Acropolis can lead to “devaluation of the greatest archaeological and architectural treasure, the preservation of which mankind has entrusted to modern Greece.” In addition, the integrity of the archaeological site can seriously disrupt the use of different styles.
The consequences of ill-considered decisions about the reconstruction of the Acropolis have already caused numerous critical comments last year, when rare footpaths were covered with concrete.
