More than 100 liver transplants have been performed at the Laiko Clinic

The Ministry of Health is actively implementing important legislative measures, which are expected to give a dynamic impetus to the development of transplantation.

Professor of Surgery G. Sotiropoulos, under whose leadership the first specialized university liver transplant center was created, proudly presented the most important event in the field of transplantology – opening of the University Surgical Clinic for Liver Transplantation and Hepatological Surgery. Over the past two decades, experienced surgeons have performed more than 100 successful organ transplants, giving life to hundreds of patients.

At the event organized by Professor Sotiropoulos, he emphasized the message that “at the beginning of this year, a new path in therapy was opened when a transplantation from a living donor was performed for the first time in our country“This achievement has significantly raised scientific standards in the field of transplantation.

A living donor transplant means that the organ or tissue to be transplanted is taken from a living person rather than from a deceased person. This could be, for example, a kidney, part of the liver or lung transplant. A living donor undergoes a thorough medical examination to ensure that he or she is healthy and can safely donate the organ or tissue. Such operations have several advantages:

1. Reduced waiting time. Patients can receive the organ they need faster than waiting for an organ from a deceased donor.
2. Best quality organs. Organs from living donors are usually in better condition because they do not undergo the processes associated with the death of the donor.
3. Operation planning. The operation can be planned in advance, allowing for better preparation and reduced risks.

Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis confidently stated that a huge amount of work has been done in this area of ​​medicine in recent years. He predicted that by 2026 our country will compete with “best European countries for organ donation rates“. The minister pointedly added that the Greeks can play important role in this decisive chapter as a people and as scientists.

Important legislative measures are being actively implemented that will give a dynamic impetus to the development of transplantation. Deputy Minister of Health Marios Themistocleous noted: “Nwe need excellent and well trained transplant surgical teams“. He also emphasized need to change reimbursement for KEN-based transplant procedures.

“Transplant medicine is at the apex of the healthcare system and involves many specialized personnel. But what is expected to completely change this area is the approval of the appointment of an additional 28 transplant coordinators, whose key role is undeniable“, Mr. Themistocleous emphasized in an interview with NEA.

200 teaching posts opening up at NHS hospitals will provide a boost to further clinic staffing. Rector of ΕΚΠΑ Gerasimos Siassos believes that this an important step not only to stop the brain drain, but also to return scientists who went abroad back to our country.
