Volos: 31-year-old animal killer taken into custody

A 31-year-old man accused of stabbing kittens and other stray animals in Volos was remanded in custody after giving evidence on Tuesday morning (8/10).

Animal welfare organizations and animal lovers were waiting outside the courthouse to protest. PArena duly apologized, and immediately after the apology he was taken to prison. His parents also gave evidence to the investigating judge.

“We asked that my client be treated as a patient and not as a defendant in the sense that you all understand. We are convinced that prison will not help him. We were told to submit a request for transfer to the psychiatric clinic of Korydallos prison”said his lawyer.

Regarding the incidents that occurred after the use of hard drugs, he believes that they all occurred automatically in “a climate of narcotic delirium”the lawyer added.

Earlier, animal lovers met him outside the court to express their protest. “We give our lives for the living, how can a person behave like this?” – said one of the women. “One road to prison, or even better to a psychiatric clinic”said another woman. “He worked in the catering industry, I didn’t expect this, I hope he goes to jail for life.”says the third.

Let us remind you that a man was arrested last Wednesday (2/10) on charges of involvement in the killing of stray animals in Volos. The arrest took place in the afternoon, and after authorities obtained evidence that helped them identify him, a city-wide manhunt began. He is reportedly known to authorities because he has been arrested for drug use and theft in the past. When he was arrested, he was found in possession of a small amount of cannabis and a knife.

CCTV footage

The criminal attacked the dog with a sharp object at the intersection of Spyridis and Karoli streets, which led to its death, and on Monday, September 30, in a relatively crowded place, a cat was found stabbed to death. The killing of the cat was recorded on surveillance video, which is in the possession of the police.

The video shows a hooded criminal ambushing a kitten on St Nicholas Street. He approaches him, feeds him to calm him down, and then fatally wounds him with a sharp object. The kitten runs in shock, trying to escape, but ends up dying.

“He was the mascot of our area. We fed him, took care of him. He chose us and never caused any problems,” said the owner of the store near which the slaughtered cat was found in an interview with the website taxydromos.gr. Reports on the same site indicate at least 10 incidents in the past two weeks, involving three dogs and seven cats.
