Sammy Basso lived the longest with premature aging syndrome

Sammy Basso, an Italian man with premature aging syndrome, has died at the age of 28. He lived longer than anyone diagnosed with progeria.

A rare syndrome that causes premature aging of the body. Diseases characteristic of the normal aging process – cataracts, tumors, diabetes – are extremely rare in progeria. However, the prognosis for life is unfavorable: life expectancy ranges from 7 to 28 years, averaging 12-13 years.

Doctors told Basso's parents that he would only live until he was thirteen years old. But they turned to European and American specialists for help, who made great progress in their research.

Sammy Basso, originally from the Vicenza area, studied natural sciences and created a non-profit organization dedicated to the disease from which he suffered, with the aim of raising awareness and informing citizens. Five years ago, the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, awarded him the title of Knight of the Italian Republic.
