Three-day weekend on October 28: 5 amazing ideas for a trip and outdoor recreation

This year, October 28 falls on a Monday, which opens up excellent opportunities for us for a three-day vacation.

For those who want and can go on an exciting excursion, this time of year is the best! And the sooner you decide and prepare, the better, since Athens is expected to be “empty”, while the main nearby destinations, on the contrary, are “full”.

We present to you five wonderful places that are definitely worth visiting if you love mountains or the sea. These directions are just a few hours' drive from Athens and you can reach them with your own car in comfort and convenience.

1. Nafplio. Distance from Athens 138 km (about 2 hours)

This is the best place to start your journey. Magical, romantic and beautiful, the city offers endless possibilities for you to explore. Apart from famous sights such as Palamidi, Bourtzi, Syntagma Square and the narrow streets of the Old Town, Nafplio has many interesting places to visit. Stroll along the picturesque alleys, ride a bike in Arvanitia and the surrounding area, and take mini-tours to Mycenae and Epidaurus.

2. Trikala Corinthia. Distance from Athens 143 km (about 2 hours)

Do you have a free day and want to take a break from the city rhythm? A mini excursion to Trikala in Corinthia is the perfect solution! Trikala is a place located only 147 km from Athens, but it completely changes your view when you begin to climb after Xylokastro to the Zireas mountain range (Ζήρειας). Three picturesque villages – Kato, Mesi (Μεσαία) and Ano Trikala – are located at an altitude of 1100 meters and provide panoramic views of the Corinthian Gulf. Leave the car in Mesi (Μεσαία), where most of the taverns are located, and enjoy an outdoor walk in Ano and Kato that will invigorate you and improve your well-being.

3. Agoriani. Distance from Athens 195 km (about 2 hours 40 minutes)

Parnassus hides many diamonds, and Agoriani is one of them. The amphitheater-like village of Agoriani, also known as Eptalofos, is steadily gaining popularity among weekend tourists. The charm of the mountains, stone houses with tiled roofs, a classic cobbled square with centuries-old plane trees and cozy street cafes, as well as paths leading to natural beauty – these are the main attractions of this village. A stone path starting from the square leads you along a stream to a wonderful waterfall, while the E4 path takes you through the caves and forests of Parnassus to Delphi.

4. Galaxidi. Distance from Athens 214 km (almost 3 hours)

This small seaside town is simply created for those who want to combine nature, sea and mountains. The forest opposite the port of Agora is ideal for walks, and in Spilia the Mamma Square (Μάμμα) is of particular interest. In addition, a few meters from the city there are several taverns where you can enjoy fresh fish.

5. Kalavrita. Distance from Athens 189 km (almost 2.5 hours)

Kalavryta is located just two hours from Athens, and is one of the most beautiful and accessible places. Here you can stroll and explore the dozens of shops on the main street, as well as visit attractions such as the Municipal Museum of the Kalavryta Holocaust, the site of the sacrifice and the Holy Monastery of Megalo Spilio. The monastery of the Holy Lavra rises 5 km outside the village. If you have time, don't miss the opportunity to visit the Lake Cave in the village of Kastria. It's also worth taking the hour-long train ride from Odontotos to Diakofto. For the adventurous, the area offers a wide range of activities, such as trekking and canyoning.
