The greening of Athens continues. Since the beginning of the year, three thousand new trees have been planted in the city, and they promise 5,000 by the end of the year.
Last Wednesday, October 2, the mayor of Athens Haris Doukas, deputy mayor for environment and greenery Georgios Apostolopoulos, and employees of the Department of Greenery and Urban Fauna took part in the planting of another 30 trees in the Pagrati Grove (Παγκρατίου). The mayor of the capital said:
“Staying true to our election commitments, we continue to make Athens greener. Since the beginning of the year, we have planted more than 3,000 trees and today we are symbolically planting another 30 trees in Alsos Pagratiou. Our tree plantings, which citizens can monitor through the Athens Trees app, are carried out with the cooperation and active participation of residents, schools, local agencies and organizations. Together we are moving forward dynamically with the goal of planting 5,000 trees by the end of 2024.”
In turn, Deputy Mayor Giorgos Apostolopoulos said, quotes newsbeast.gr:
“We are constantly fighting for a green Athens. So far we have fortified our city with olive, plane, jacaranda, mulberry, orange and carob trees. Over the next three months, we will accelerate the planting of new trees on Lycabettus Hill, the National Garden, the National Park, the Havorkis and Evelpidon groves, and Alepotrypa in Kypseli, where a microforest with thousands of plant species will be created that will green the most densely populated area in Europe. Change is a team effort and that is our goal at all levels.”
