Uber: significant growth in international travel in Greece

Tourist traffic in Greece began to grow rapidly, and according to Uber, already a year ago, app usage data showed a significant increase in the movement of foreign visitors around the country.

With the increase in tourist traffic around mid-summer of this year, this trend has become more pronounced. Particularly noticeable is the growth in the number of routes to/from Eleftherios Venizelos Airport, the number of which increased by 50% in the last quarter compared to 2023.

The increased demand for transport began already in April, when it became difficult to find a taxi. This indicates that supply cannot always meet summer demand, and this phenomenon (transport shortage) continued in September in Athens and Thessaloniki.

As can be seen from the data, tourists choose Uber as a reliable and safe alternative for their trips. Americans and Brits continue to be the top two nationalities among app users, with Australians, Canadians and Brazilians rounding out the top five over the past three months (July-September 2024).

In Athens, the number of trips increased by an average of 47% compared to the same period last year (July-September 2023). In Thessaloniki, an increase of 76% was recorded. Routes to Eleftherios Venizelos Airport increased by 50% in the last quarter compared to 2023. At the same time, routes to and from the port of Piraeus showed similar growth, averaging around 80%.

Thus, the tourist season this year indicates that the summer is continuing successfully, and the numbers show significant increase in tourist flows outside the traditional summer months.
