Suspicion of Marburg virus in a student in Hamburg was not confirmed

On Wednesday, October 2, Hamburg police closed two tracks at the central station. The reason was the suspicion that one of the passengers had the dangerous Marburg virus.

It was believed that the 26-year-old medical student and his girlfriend, who were visiting from Rwanda, could have become infected the most dangerous Marburg virus. They arrived in Hamburg on a train from Frankfurt am Main and developed flu-like symptoms.

Previously, the student had flown to Germany on a direct flight from Rwanda, where he was treating a patient infected with the Marburg virus. However, an examination of two passengers carried out at the Hamburg-Eppendorf Medical Center showed a negative result for the presence of the deadly virus.

The Hamburg social security authorities said that the student and his girlfriend never had any complaints or symptoms characteristic of the Marburg virus. The student himself said that when he came into contact with an infected patient in Rwanda, he was wearing all the necessary protective equipment.

Marburg virus belongs to the same family as Ebola, but is considered even more dangerous. The mortality rate, according to WHO, is from 24% to 88%. Main informationprovided by the World Health Organization:

  1. Marburg virus disease (Marburg virus disease), formerly known as Marburg hemorrhagic fever, is a severe, often fatal human disease.
  2. The virus causes severe viral hemorrhagic fever in humans.
  3. The average case fatality rate for MVD is about 50%. Case fatality rates in past outbreaks have ranged from 24% to 88% depending on the strain of the virus and the treatment of the case.
  4. Early supportive care with rehydration and symptomatic treatment improves survival. There is no licensed treatment yet that has been proven to neutralize the virus, but a number of blood products, immunotherapies, and drug therapies are currently being developed.
