An 18th-century temple built on a mountain cliff burned down in Corinthia


Severe damage from big firethat broke out in Corinthiacarried the church “Panagia Katafigiotissa» in Zaholi Xylokastro.

As captured on video posted on social networks, the passage of fire caused churches significant damage.

Built in 1782 on a steep cliff, the church is an important historical monument of the Xylokastro-Evrostini region. It has special significance for local residents, since during the period of Ottoman rule the Greeks found refuge here from persecution. The church, named after Our Lady Katafighiotissa, which translates as “refuge,” symbolized salvation for people.

Over the centuries, the temple fell into disrepair, but local residents maintained it by cutting steps into the rock and repairing the entrance themselves. The church hanging over the abyss has become a famous landmark.

Forest fires in Corinthia lasted 4 days, destroying 7,000 hectares of forest. The fire claimed the lives of two people and caused extensive economic and environmental damage.

In particular, as the service recorded, until yesterday, the area affected by the fire that broke out in Rosenn Xylokastro Corinthia amounted to 71,402 acres (7140.2 hectares).

According to meteo.gr/EAA, the fire in Corinthia from 2010 to date is the largest during this period to affect the prefecture of Corinthia.
