A fire rages in Xylokastro, 2 charred bodies are found, schools are closed today (video)

The fight against the fire that broke out yesterday, September 30, in Xylokastro continued throughout the night. A fire truck burned, residents were evacuated, and at least two people were killed.

It has not yet been possible to identify the dead, perhaps these are those who rushed to the aid of a shepherd who was caught in a fire trap, and who was rescued. Today, fire department spokesman Vasilios Vatrakoyannis confirmed the discovery of two burnt bodies.

They were found in a pen near the village of Ano Pitsa near Elliniko. Identification is expected to determine whether they are two volunteer firefighters, ages 35 and 40. The two men reportedly took their motorcycles and moved toward the front of the fire to provide assistance. They were last contacted at 9.30pm yesterday and have been missing since then. They sent a video of the fire from where they were. But communication was difficult because many telephone antennas were burned out.

The evacuation of local residents is being coordinated by Message 112 – shortly after midnight on Sunday, residents of Corfiotissa Corinthia were asked to move to Vrissoules and Xanthochori.

In the latest message from the fire service, as writes newsbeast.gr, 289 firefighters, 98 vehicles and 9 foot groups are involved, they are making every effort to fight the fire.

On Sunday, Minister for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Vassilis Kikilias held an inter-ministerial coordination meeting to discuss next steps on the fire front.

The fire front is estimated at 30 kilometers; at dawn the fire spread to the village of Ano Loutra. Houses are burning, the flames have spread over a distance of several tens of meters.

All schools in the municipality of Xylokastro-Eurostini in Corinthia will remain closed today. According to the municipality, “the decision was made due to the emergency conditions resulting from the fire” in the Rosenes area.
