The President named the media data on Ukraine's losses "false"


Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky responded to the media's publication of alleged data on Ukraine's losses.

He assured that the real figures of losses of the Ukrainian army in the war with the Russian Federation are much lower. The reaction followed information from The Wall Street Journal about 80 thousand Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers killed in the war. “This is a lie,” Zelensky said the day before at a meeting with journalists, quotes Interfax on Saturday, September 21:

“80 thousand? That's a lie. The real figure is much lower than what was published. Significantly.”

Earlier last week, an American newspaper published an article in which it assessed total losses of Ukraine and Russia in the war amount to 1 million people. At the same time, Ukraine allegedly lost 80 thousand soldiers, and Russia – 200 thousand.

In February 2024 Ukrainian President Zelensky has publicly named the number of Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers killed since the start of the war for the first time. He said at a press conference that during Russia's full-scale invasion, 31 thousand Ukrainian military:

“Thirty-one thousand Ukrainian soldiers died in this war. Not 300 thousand, not 150 thousand, whatever Putin and his lying entourage are lying about. But each of these losses is a big loss for us.”

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, from February 24, 2022 to February 25, 2024, the total combat losses* of Russian troops on the territory of Ukraine amounted to approximately 409,820 people.

*Total combat losses are divided into two groups: irretrievable losses, which include those killed, missing in action, and captured, and medical losses, which include those wounded in battle and sick people hospitalized in medical institutions (units) to receive medical care.
