OSINT analysts report that a Sarmat nuclear missile exploded during testing in Russia, leaving behind a huge crater.

Nuclear deterrent forces of the Russian Federation failed during new tests of the RS-28 Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missilewhich is capable of carrying a nuclear charge. OSINT analyst MT Anderson published satellite images of the aftermath of the failed launch at the Plesetsk test site on the social network X. The images show a large crater formed as a result of the missile's fall. The message says, quotes Glavred edition:

“The missile exploded in the silo, leaving a huge crater and destroying the test site.”

The causes of the accident are still unknown.. Considering that the Sarmat missile has a liquid-fueled rocket engine, it can be assumed that an incident with its detonation is possible, resulting in a crater. The satellite image shows four fire trucks and a fire near the missile silo, which may indicate an unsuccessful launch attempt.

This is already the fourth failed test of the heavy ICBM “Sarmat”, the publication recalls. Of the five attempts, only one was successful – on April 20, 2022.

Putin unveiled the Sarmat during his famous 2018 State of the Union address, declaring that the missile would be able to attack targets not only through the North Pole but also through the South Pole, would be able to penetrate missile defense systems, and would carry high-yield nuclear warheads, including hypersonic ones.
