Athens Municipality Exterminates Rats in Syntagma


After rats were discovered brazenly roaming the central square of the Greek capital, the municipality of Athens has decisively taken up the fight against them.

According to CNN Greece, a number of actions have been taken to address the problem of rodents, the Athens municipality said in a statement in response to messages about their presence in the area:

“Syntagma Square is under the constant supervision of the competent municipal services, which promptly apply all measures envisaged for the fight against rodents within the city limits.”

According to the Department for Cleaning Territories of the Directorate of Greening and Urban Fauna, the following activities have been carried out over the past 10 days:

  1. 09/13/2024: miocide* with placement of baits in closed cafes.
  2. 09/16/2024: Miocide by placing baits in wells around the area.
  3. 19-09-2024: identifying and sealing possible entrances to rodent nests in flower beds while simultaneously laying out baits.
  4. 20-09-2024: checking and rearranging baits in closed cafes.

*Myocide is an action aimed at reducing and controlling populations of rodents, mice and rats.
