Earthquake 5.3 on the Richter scale hits Romania

An earthquake with an epicenter in Romania occurred in Buzau County at about 17:40 on September 16. Tremors were felt in Moldova, Ukraine and Bulgaria.

The epicenter of the earthquake is located 13 kilometers from the village of Bisok.

The earthquake caught Moldovan President Maia Sandu in the studio of a local TV channel where she was giving an interview. The journalist did not lose her composure, cheerfully suggesting that it was a good sign when something like this happened at the end of the broadcast.

The epicentre was about 57 km east of Brasov. The quake occurred at a depth of about 137 km, and light tremors were likely felt across parts of central and eastern Romania, southwestern Moldova, southwestern Ukraine and northern Bulgaria.

There were no initial reports of damage or casualties from the quake, but significant damage is unlikely. It may take several hours before authorities can conduct a comprehensive damage assessment, especially in remote areas. Minor aftershocks are likely in the coming days.

Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the quake zone to check for damage. There may be minor disruptions during shutdowns, but service will likely resume quickly if no damage is found. Utility outages are possible, especially near the quake's epicenter.
