Consumers' Right to Repair: New Rules Coming from the EU

The European Parliament has approved the Directive on consumers' right to repair and will gradually begin the process of its integration in Member States.

As noted, “this will help address issues such as excessive repair costs (through transparent pricing of spare parts), thereby strengthening the ecosystem and eliminating unfair practices by manufacturers to resist repair of household appliances.”

The innovation is expected to contribute to achieving sustainable consumption goals by reducing waste generated from discarded goods (and the costs of their disposal) and limiting demand for resources, including energy.

Let us recall that between When repairing or purchasing a new product, the cost of repair, durability, availability and proximity of the repair service, and the time required for repair play an important role.

The above practice is changing with the new directive.which makes repairs easier and more cost-effective for consumers, both within and outside of the legal warranty, as opposed to replacing goods. While the increase in demand is expected to lead to growth in the “repair” sector, while also incentivizing manufacturers and retailers to develop more sustainable business models.

It is noted that The consumer right to repair extends to such goodssuch as washing machines, dishwashers, clothes dryers, vacuum cleaners, telephones, computers and tablets, as well as products containing batteries for passenger cars.
