Greek Foreign Ministry Condemns Desecration of Greek Orthodox Cemetery in Istanbul


The Greek Foreign Ministry in a statement condemned the desecration of an Orthodox cemetery in Istanbul, calling on the Turkish authorities to take appropriate measures. The statement said:

“We unequivocally condemn the desecration of the Greek Orthodox cemetery of Agios Eleftherios in the Tataulon community of Istanbul, which is an insult to the memory and history of the Greek minority in Turkey. We call on the Turkish authorities to take appropriate measures against this heinous act.”

Desecration of a cemetery, like writes CNN Greece, happened on the day of the Divine Liturgy at Panagia Sumela in Trebizond. Information was published in Turkish media. According to it, on August 23, employees of the cemetery of Agios Eleftherios discovered a gap in the barbed wire, saw damage to graves and dug holes, and dogs found drugs. The police were immediately notified, they collected evidence and recorded the damage.
