Storm hits central and northern Greece


Dozens of problems in Thessaloniki and Ioannina were caused by extreme weather conditions, a storm that hit central and northern Greece.

Trees have been uprooted, roads are flooded and power outages are a concern. The bad weather is set to continue for the next few days, with the most dangerous element is the high frequency of lightning strikes in many areas of the country.

The damage, mainly in Northern Greece, is significant. In particular, in the Olympiada area, a tree fell in a municipal parking lot, causing damage to the cars parked there. The tree was uprooted by a gale. A similar situation was observed in Kalamaria and Kordelio, and in Agios Charalambos Lagadas, the roof caught fire after a lightning strike. There was no one in the house, 6 firefighters in 3 vehicles left for the scene.

Dry grass fires (caused by lightning strikes) reported in Vagiochori, Nea Apollonia and Stavros were immediately extinguished.

Residents of Patras, Igoumenitsa and Corfu have been notified of severe weather in their areas via 112. The warning states that severe weather will continue until midday tomorrow Tuesday (August 20). Citizens are asked to follow the instructions of the authorities.
