Crete to be Europe's Gastronomic Region for 2026

The inclusion of Crete in the gastronomic regions of Europe was approved by the International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Art and Tourism at a meeting of its board of directors.

The island has been unanimously declared “European Region of Gastronomy for 2026” by experts. As the regional authorities of Crete note, “this event has a special symbolism and special value, since the unanimous decision of an international institution strengthens the special identity of Crete, formed over the years.

Personalities with strong historical characteristics have been buried in the Cretan soil for centuries. And their names have become known thanks to great archaeological discoveries. At the same time, an identity oriented towards the present and the future, such as the uniqueness of Cretan gastronomy, represents a special element of our cultural heritage.”

“The honourable decision of the International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Art and Tourism to declare Crete the Gastronomic Region of Europe for 2026 is a great success“We are proud of this,” said Crete Governor Stavros Arnaoutakis in a statement. “In 2026, we will continue our work as the European Gastronomic Region with the aim of highlighting the standards of Cretan food products on the world gastronomic map.”
