Allergies directly or indirectly cause the death of 180,000 people every year

The figures presented by the Hippocrates Hospital on the occasion of World Allergy Day are frightening.

Allergies, directly or indirectly, cause the death of 180,000 people every year worldwide. 22% of the population suffers from some form of allergy, while Greek statistics show that cases of allergic reactions have increased by 50% over the past 30 years, and u one in three people will develop some form of allergy during their lifetime.

These figures were cited by the hospital “Ιπποκράτειο Νοσοκομείο” in Thessaloniki on the occasion of July 8, which, at the initiative of the World Allergy Organization, was established as “World Allergy Day” (Παγκόσμια Ημέρα Αλλεργίας). The goal of the day is raising public awareness of the health consequences of allergies.

An allergy is an overreaction of our immune system (hypersensitivity reaction) to a substance (allergen).

There is evidence that in breastfed children, as well as in children, those raised in a non-sterile (not too clean) environment are less likely to develop type I and II hypersensitivityTherefore, a mother can benefit her baby by continuing to breastfeed.

The 3rd Children's Clinic of the Hippocrates Hospital of Thessaloniki has a pediatric allergy department and a special outpatient clinic for the treatment of children with allergies.
