Bureaucracy is a thing of the past: express procedures via gov.gr, issuance of marriage, baptism and divorce certificates


The issuance of digital documents – marriage certificates, baptismal certificates, divorce decrees – is processed and issued by the Ministry of Digital Management with the blessing of the Church, which seems to be accepting the “digital world” and becoming part of it.

By the end of the year, citizens will be able to process their requests addressed to the Greek Church and carry out all relevant procedures via computer without paperwork. electronic portal gov.gr.

As Digital Governance Minister Dimitris Papastergiou told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, “Ministry of Digital Governance and the Greek Church are initiating very ambitious and necessary efforts to further simplifying the process of issuing documents. Procedures related to religious ceremonies, weddings and baptisms (which are currently performed only when visiting the Holy Temple) will be carried out digitally by the end of the year. At the Ministry of Digital Governance, following the vision of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and collaborating with the whole of society on a daily basis, we We offer solutions for more digital and efficient office work, convenient for all”.

The creation of an application, which will be managed by the Metropolitanate, is planned, through which the necessary applications for the sacrament of marriage and baptism will be received and processed electronically. At the same time, the Ministry of Digital Management, after completing the work on the site, promises that “all bureaucratic procedures with the city registers of municipalities will be carried out automatically, and interested parties will be notified either via SMS to their mobile phone or in the form of a message to their e-mail address regarding the requested certificate”.

In particular, the documents required by citizens in a number of cases will be simplified and digitized to make everyday life easier for Greek residents. To the list of digitized documents the issuance of a religious marriage and baptism certificate will be added, while the divorce certificate is also planned to be issued in digital form in one click (the current document issuance system will be replaced).
