More than half of Russians, as shown by a Levada Center poll, are against the use of nuclear weapons in a war with Ukraine.
However More than a third of Russian citizens said that a nuclear strike could be “justified”: of these, 10% of respondents support it, and 24% consider it rather appropriate.
The number of supporters of a nuclear strike has become a record for the entire war – it has increased by 5% over the past year. Support for the use of nuclear weapons is highest among pensioners, and lowest among young people.
In the same time 58% of Russians believe that Ukraine and Russia should begin peace talksthe number of their supporters increased by 4% in May. At the same time, 37% support continuation of military actionand this number has decreased by 6% over the past two months.
41% of Russians believe that Russia is more interested in the negotiations (their number has increased by 3% over the past year), 21% – that Ukraine (an increase of 4%), and 28% believe that both parties are interested in such a solution equally.
Only 11% of Russian citizens believe that Ukraine is responsible for the deaths and destruction in the war – this number has decreased by 5% over the past year.
