Diver was fatally hit by boat while surfacing

A 43-year-old underwater hunter died tragically at sea off the coast of Samothrace when a boat rushed over him at high speed.

According to evros-news.gr, a local resident worked as a seasonal firefighter on the island and was known as a person who carefully observed safety measures where they were required. In particular, when diving, he placed a classic buoy in the place where he dived. And yet the tragedy occurred.

His body is expected to be transferred to Alexandroupolis University Hospital on Tuesday for an autopsy. The accident occurred in the afternoon in Akrotiri Kamariotissa, in the area of Agios Andreas, when a boat hit a man who was at sea. On board the boat were two Bulgarian citizens who were vacationing on the island, who were arrested by Samothrace coast guard officers and will be taken to the prosecutor's office tomorrow. According to a local website, tourists didn't see the diving buoy and “ran over” the man.

The body of the deceased was taken by coast guard boat to the port, where his grief-stricken parents and sister, as well as local residents, arrived.
