June 24-25 this year on about. Hydra (Aegean Sea), at the initiative of the Mayor’s Office of the island and the Russian Embassy, commemorative events were organized dedicated to Russia’s contribution to the victory of the Greek National Liberation Revolution, the 200th anniversary of which is celebrated in 2021.
The actions are included in the program of the “cross” Year of History Russia – Greece under the patronage of the President of the Russian Federation and the Prime Minister of the Hellenic Republic.
A meeting was held between the Ambassador of Russia to Greece A.M. Maslov and the Mayor of Hydra G. Kukudakis. Issues of further bilateral cooperation were discussed, including in the context of the Year of History in 2021.
As part of the solemn ceremony, one of the central streets of the island’s capital was named after Russian subjects, shipbuilders I. Afanasyev and S. Leonidis, who lived on the island. Hydra and helped the Greeks in the struggle for freedom. The national anthems of Russia and Greece were performed, a prayer service was served. The Ambassador of Russia and the Mayor of the island addressed the audience with greetings.
During the international scientific conference held in full-time format, prominent Russian and Greek scientists noted the decisive role of our country in Greece’s independence. The efforts of the Russian philhellenians and the connections of Hydra with Russia since the time of the First Archipelago Expedition of the Russian Imperial Fleet in 1770-1774 are underlined.
