Ancient artifacts sunken in a Classical era shipwreck were discovered during seabed surveys carried out by the Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO) on the island of Kythira in the context of the Crete-Peloponnese power grid connection.

Amphorae from Corfu, Skopelos and Chios have been found in the holds of a sunken ship, indicating that commercial activities in the Aegean and Ionian Seas were developed at that time.
The completion of the computer analysis (3D rendering) of the ship’s wreck, which is in the process of being completed, is expected to provide an even clearer picture of the ship’s size and the volume of cargo it carries.
In order to ensure that the archaeological treasure finds are carefully raised and used in the best possible way for the benefit of society as a whole, IPTO announced its intention to support possible initiatives with the assistance of the competent authorities.
