The head of the statue dating back to Roman times was recovered from the sea near Preveza in western Greece, according to a statement from the Ministry of Culture on Tuesday.
The artifact was discovered by a local official at a depth of about 10 meters, who notified the administration of the port of Preveza and then the city Ephorat of antiquities.
The head was probably created during the time of the emperors Antoninus or the North (2-3 centuries AD) and is made of Pentelian marble. He has some damage to his headgear, nose, right ear and a small part of his chin, and was partially covered by marine life.
Archaeologists organized the transportation of the artifact to the Archaeological Museum of Nikopolis, where restorers took care of it.
