Chania hospital overcrowded with dozens of patients with viral gastroenteritis (video)

Over the past 24 hours, dozens of patients have been admitted to Chania General Hospital with symptoms of gastroenteritis.

Most of them, 27 people, are young people aged 18 to 23 years, among them 12 students. The doctors were surprised by the fact that the source of infection has not been established – all patients live in different areas of Chania.

This is a “subcontagious virus”, the symptoms of which are not related to eating, the head of the hospital noted and asked people not to panic. We are talking about norovirus*, which discovered after initial examination in the hospital in several admitted patients. Some of them have already been discharged, while others still remain in Chania Hospital and are undergoing treatment, tells newsbeast.gr.

*Norovirus, also known as Norwalk virus and sometimes called winter vomiting disease, is the most common cause of gastroenteritis. The infection is characterized by bloodless diarrhea, vomiting and stomach pain. Fever or headaches may occur.
