Will Ukrainians really have to pay tax on pensions now? Important information.
One of the Ukrainian publications announced the introduction of a 15% tax on pensionswhile referring to the regional branch of the State Tax Service. Many pensioners not only easily believed it, but also managed to be outraged on social networks. And this discussion made it possible to discover “where the legs grow from” * this news.
The publication erroneously referred to a 2015 publication. In Ukraine, until 2016, there were several personal income tax rates (PIT). However, since 2016, a flat rate of 18% has been in effect. A number of media outlets that reported on the tax on pensions also did not pay attention to the fact that the link leads to old publication data with a progressive rate and personal income tax of 15%.
There are no taxes on pensions in Ukraine; these changes came into force in 2020, and there are no plans to introduce them either. The tax changes concern the military tax, which pensioners have not paid and will not pay. Ukrainian pensioners who have old-age payments are also exempt from paying land tax. The benefit applies if their plot meets certain limits.
*The expression “where the legs grow from” is used in a figurative sense and means “source”, “reason”.
