5 people who had been drinking are in critical condition "rakia" in Heraklion

Three tourists – a 35-year-old German and two Britons aged 69 and 67, as well as a 45-year-old hotel employee and a 38-year-old bartender, who had drunk a glass of rakia (they thought) were in critical condition.

The glasses were served by a 29-year-old barmaid who offered the drink as a treat. According to cretalive.gr, three tourists and an employee remain in critical condition in the Pagni intensive care unit, and the bartender is in the Venizelion intensive care unit in a medicated coma under a ventilator. He has swelling of the abdomen and throat, his condition is assessed as very serious.

Meanwhile, as part of the police's preliminary investigation, a check is expected at the hotel. The hotel and bar managers, as well as the barmaid, were to appear before an investigating judge.

The drink turned out to be a detergent. The near-fatal incident occurred on Friday evening when an employee found a glass bottle in the refrigerator, which she mistook for rakija, and gave it to a group of tourists and two of her colleagues, and also took the glass for herself, but did not have time to consume the drink. Five drunken men immediately appeared symptoms of poisoning, and an ambulance came for them.

The police, who received information about the incident, arrested the hotel and bar managers and took them to the Heraklion prosecutor's office with the materials of the case of causing dangerous bodily harm by negligence.

A sample of the chemical has been sent for analysis to determine its type and a preliminary investigation is underway to determine how it ended up in the bar's refrigerator.

Local media reports the chemical is dishwasher detergent.
