Anyone who makes profit from a YouTube channel (e.g. through advertising, subscriptions, sponsorships, etc.) or other social networks must declare the income to the tax authorities and be taxed in two different ways.
In Greece, income from YouTube, as from other activities on the Internet, is considered income and is subject to taxation. However, depending on the type of income and the frequency of receiving it, there are two different situations. Taxation of YouTube income in Greece depends mainly on the nature of the activity.
All YouTube content creators who receive money from advertising, subscriptions, sponsorships or other sources are required to declare their income to the tax authorities. How you are taxed depends on whether your activity is professional or casual. That is, if creating content on YouTube is a systematic work with the goal of making a profit, then the income will be considered entrepreneurial. Conversely, if it is an occasional activity, then the income will be taxed as income from casual employment. In particular, the tax service “sees” the following two situations with income:
1. Business income: A YouTuber who earns significant income is considered to be engaged in business. This implies the obligation to open your own business, Maintain accounting and issue receipts/invoices. Income is taxed according to the self-employment tax schedule (starts at 9% and increases based on the amount of income).
2. Income from casual work: if the income is small and does not exceed 10,000 euros, it can be declared as “income from casual employment.” In this case, the income is subject to independent taxation at a rate of 22%, but no books need to be opened at the tax office.
In any case, YouTubers must declare their income annually on their tax return. If the income is from advertising, VAT may have to be paid, especially if the income is from intra-community transactions (eg Google Ireland). “Professional” YouTubers will have to pay insurance premiums to EFKA.
