The Russian language became the reason for the dismissal of a security guard from an Estonian store

A security guard was fired from a store in Estonia because he spoke to a customer in Russian.

The Estonian Language Department received a complaint that the security guard at the Maxima X store, located at Kopli 35b in Tallinn, did not speak a word of Estonian. reports publication rus.err.ee. A buyer approached him with a request to show him the ice cream department. To a question asked in Estonian, the security guard answered in Russian, which “confused the client.”

The Language Department noted that if the security guard in question is an employee of a company providing security services, Maxima should contact the partner and emphasize that, in accordance with the Language Law, the buyer has the right to service and information in Estonian. The security guard, in turn, must have a language category of at least level B2. In case of repeated complaints, the Language Inspectorate will begin proceedings.

Maxima responded by notifying the department that it had forwarded the department’s customer complaint to the security company, which decided to replace the security guard at the store in question.
