The largest consumer of Russian gas refuses it from 2025

Wien Energie GmbH, one of the last major consumers in Europe, is refusing gas from Russia.

The company supplies energy to two million people in and around the Austrian capital. For the first time in decades, Wien Energie GmbH said it is refusing Russian fuel, writes Bloomberg.

The company has secured 10 terawatt hours of alternative energy, equivalent to about 12 percent of national consumption, from North Africa and other global LNG suppliers. Peter Hanke, head of Vienna's financial management, said:

“Because of Russia's war of aggression, independence from Russian gas is critical to security of supply. All households, commercial customers and power plants will run on non-Russian gas in 2025.”

While Wien Energie will continue to purchase gas through the Central European Gas Terminal, in future it will require traders to confirm that the fuel arriving in the city does not originate in Russia. The company said it will use certificates of origin that are tamper-proof and based on blockchain technology.

The company has promised not to raise prices for end consumers, even if alternative sources are slightly more expensive than Russian gas, said Michael Strebl, its chief executive.
