Parliament: bill introduced "About agricultural products and food". What does it concern?


The draft law on products with the POP identification was submitted to parliament by the Ministry of Rural Development and Food.

The bill entitled “Control procedures, administrative measures and sanctions in the field of agricultural products and food products with protected designations of origin (POO)protected geographical indications and guaranteed traditional distinctive specialities”, has been examined by the Greek authorities.

The European Union's system of geographical indications protects the names of products originating in certain areas and possessing particular qualities or enjoying a reputation linked to the area of ​​production.

As noted in the introductory report to bill“Recently the Regulations were issued (EU) 2024/1143 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 11 April 2024 on geographical indications for wine, alcoholic beverages and agricultural productsas well as about guaranteed traditional products and additional indicators of agricultural product quality (L 1143). In accordance with the above, the proposed rules aimed at improving control over the production and marketing of these productsas well as to improve the existing institutional framework as a whole by adapting existing legislation to the above-mentioned regulations.”

Let us remind you that it is produced in Greece more than 100 products with protected designation of origin (PDO)Among them:

  • 33 types of wine
  • 20 different types of cheese
  • 19 Types of Olive Oil
  • 26 types of vegetables, fruits and legumes
  • 2 types of honey
  • traditional products such as Avgotarajo from Mesolonghi, saffron from Kozani and chios mastic.

These products are known for their high quality and unique properties associated with their region of origin.
