Athens City Train: From Varibobi to Stavros Niarchos Centre

In the coming years, Line 1 of the Athens Metro, the so-called Urban Electric Train (ΗΣΑΠ), will move even further north, serving even more residents of the Attica region.

In recent years, the Athens metro network has seen intensive mobility as part of efforts to connecting even more districts to the city's transport structurewhich means easier travel for hundreds of thousands of its residents.

On October 10, 2022, the extension of Line 3 to Piraeus (Maniatika, Piraeus and Municipal Theatre stations) was completed. At the same time, the contractor is expected to take on the project of extending Line 2 to the western suburbs with Palatiani, Ilion and Agios Nikolaos stations. However, this will not be stopped, as the intention of the competent authorities is to further expansion of the territorial map, served by the metroAccording to the latest plan, the project under consideration is to extend Line 1 (ΗΣΑΠ) further north from the Kifissia terminal.

In the past, and in particular according to the preliminary study of 2006, the plan envisaged the extension of the ΗΣΑΠ line from Kifissia to Agios Stefanos, with new stops in Kastri, “Narkisos”, Drosia, Anixi and Ag. Stefanos. However, this plan remained “frozen”. Now, the new project has excluded the possibility of extending line 1 to Agios Stefanos, but supported the creation of a terminus at the Varibobi junction with an intermediate stop in Nea Eritrea.

In particular, it is envisaged that the expansion will be carried out by “tunneling” (deepening the current Kifissia terminal underground), and then building a tunnel about 2.5-3 kilometers long to create the Nea Eritrea station and, finally, a line ending at the terminal in Waribobi.

This a particularly important project for the capitalbecause it will mean merging Kifissos with the metro networkwhich will lead to partial relief of the currently congested road axis that connects the Kifissia region with the Gulf of Falirikos.

Finally, it should be noted that The plan envisages the expansion of ΗΣΑΠ to the southern suburbs, and in particular to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centrewhich receives millions of visitors every year. A study has been completed that envisages the creation of an underground branch of Line 1 through a branch after Thisio Station, the length of the line will be about 3.5 km and will involve the construction of 4 stations: Ano Petralona, Davaki Square, Filaretos Hill and Niarchos Cultural Center.
