Thriller with Greek tanker Sounion in the Red Sea: If it sinks, it will be the fifth-largest environmental disaster on the planet

From official reports on the Houthi attack on the tanker “Delta Sounion” in the Red Sea and the owner of the tanker, the Vardinoyannis Group, a completely different picture emerges compared to what the Houthis themselves are reporting.

If the ship sinks, it would be the fifth-largest oil spill in history, surpassing incidents such as the 2018 Sanchi spill near China. This makes the oil transfer operation even more important, but is not approved by the United States because it is considered “extremely dangerous.”

The tanker itself belongs to the company. Delta Sounion Greek Diamantis Diamantidisand is the third in the group that the Houthis are hitting! And now the Houthis have released a video showing that the tanker was hit by a missile in the stern, where the engine room is located – a strike that immobilized the vessel, despite Greece initially reporting that “It received minor damage.”

The ship was subsequently abandoned by its crew and drifted until… the Houthis captured it, rigged it with explosives and… blew it up! Which is clearly visible in the video.

According to the Shiite organization that controls Yemen“the company to which the tanker belongs violated orders to enter ports in occupied Palestine.” The Greek-flagged tanker Sounio was transporting 1 million barrels of crude oil (150,000 tons).

Today, Motor Oil Group management announced at a briefing for analysts on the results of the first half of the year: “After successful negotiations, a temporary truce was agreed upon and the ship will be towedto avoid problems with marine pollution in the Red Sea.” Deputy General Director of MOI P. Tzannetakisa well-known businessman in the oil industry in Greece and internationally, said: “We are pleased that things are progressing well and that the negotiations are having a positive outcome.”

It should be noted that the footage of the tanker being blown up was transmitted by the Ministry of National Defense and received by the ASPIDES naval forces of the countries EU. Today's aerial footage shows the entire ship engulfed in flames:

MV Sounion spotted on Sentinel 2 on August 30, 2024, ~138 km west of Al Hudaydah Various visualizations show the vessel still on fire, with heat signatures visible over almost the entire surface of the vessel The oil slick extends for approximately 1.7 km before dissipating.

According to the rescue plan, oil With “Sounion” will be transferred to another vessel, and the vessel itself is expected to tow to safe port, probably in Djibouti. But what if the tanker is on fire? A Pentagon spokesman said on Tuesday (8/27) that “The ship is already leaking and we are on the brink of an environmental disaster”but representatives of the European operation “ASPIDES” denied this. In the next 24 hours we will see who is right…
