Lakes in Northern Greece Shrink Due to Drought (Video)

Prolonged drought and extreme heat have caused a serious water crisis in northern Greece and the drying up of lakes.

Just recently the lake Picrolimnilocated forty kilometers from Thessaloniki, hosted numerous mud bath lovers. Summer 2024 offers travelers only cracked earth from the heat. The head of the local municipality, Kostas Partsis, says, quotes Euronews:

“There has been no rain for two years, so the lake has dried up completely. There used to be a lot of water in it. People would come and swim.”

Lake shoreline Doirani on the border between Greece and North Macedonia has retreated 300 meters, and this is only in the last few years.

IN Nea Silata (Chalkidiki) Dimitris Papadakis' olive grove suffers from drought, and he and his son have to travel to a nearby area to fetch water. The situation is no better in the popular tourist area Nea Potidea – what tricks do local residents resort to in order to cope with frequent water outages! Haroula Psaropoulou, for example, says:

“I use a conservation cycle: I wash my dishes and then use that water in the yard. I shower in a basin and dump the water in the yard because otherwise everything will dry out. I try to conserve water wherever I can, and when it becomes necessary, I even take a cart and bring seawater to the toilet.”

Meanwhile, there is no comforting news for the future – the European Union Emergency Services reports that A severe drought spreads from the Black Sea west to northern Greece.
