Dutch tourist goes missing on Samos island while hiking in Eupalinos basin

A Dutch tourist went missing on Thursday morning on the island of Samos while hiking in the Eupalinos Depression in Pythagoreio.

Brigitte van Gennip, 65, was on holiday on the island and staying at a hotel in Pythagorio. She called a friend and told her about her plans for Thursday. When the woman did not respond on Friday morning, the friend reported her missing to the police, saying that Brigitte had been missing since 10:30 a.m. and that she had been walking towards the Eupalinio trench.

Malu Miedema, Bridget's daughter, wrote in her post: “My mother has been missing since yesterday in Samos. Her name is Bridget and she disappeared in the area of the Pythagorean and Eupalinian tunnels. “I understand that many people have already mobilized to search for her, which is very good in these tense times, especially since I am in Holland and trying to organize everything I can from here. Is there anyone in this group that I can mobilize to make some copies of this poster and put them up in hotels and supermarkets? Any contribution to the search for my mother would be greatly appreciated. She went missing yesterday while walking and lost her phone along the way…”.

At the time of publication of this material (Monday, August 26), the tourist had still not been found.

Editor's note:

This is far from the first case when elderly tourists from northern (and not so northern) countries disappear during solo walks. Most often they are found already dead, and the main cause of death is either a fall from a cliff or heat stroke (overheating, heart problems, etc.), which led to death. You have to be a simpleton to go on a long walk in the mountains in hot weather (and now until 5 pm the thermometer does not fall below 35 degrees) without notifying friends or hotel staff.
