The boat was damaged and ran aground after colliding with a sea turtle.

A rare incident occurred in the Cyclades, near Koufonisi, when a boat collided with a sea turtle and was forced to moor in shallow waters.

According to the Coast Guard, on the afternoon of 21/08, the Naxos Port Authority was informed that a passenger and tourist vessel (E/GT/R) en route from the port of Koufonisi to the port of Thira had collided with a sea turtle, causing damage to the propeller blades and shaft, as well as an influx of water.

The captain of the E/GT/R deliberately “ran aground” in the shallow waters of Lioliou Beach in Schinoussa. The vessel “ARGOKIOLIOTISA” H.N. 165 and a private diver came to the rescue. Four passengers, US citizens, are in good health. The Naxos Port Authority, which is conducting a preliminary investigation, has banned the E/GT/R from sailing until the damage is repaired. It is noted that no pollution of the marine environment was observed after the incident.

As is known, sea turtles can reach 2.1 meters in length and up to 590 kg in live weight.
