Abkhazia and South Ossetia may return to Georgia

The Georgian authorities have started talking about the possibility of soon returning the territories of South Ossetia and Abkhazia peacefully.

The statement was made by the ruling party “Georgian Dream” in the context of the autumn parliamentary elections, as an argument for why to vote for it.

“If Georgia's territorial integrity is restored peacefully, it will be necessary to amend the constitution so that the system of governance and territorial state structure correspond to the new reality. Given that events around Georgia are developing very dynamically, we must be prepared for such a situation at any moment,” – the party said in a statement.

IN “Georgian Dream” They stated that in order to make such changes to the constitution, the party must obtain a constitutional majority so that no one would hinder it.

Previously reportedthat the Russian authorities may agree to the return of Abkhazia and South Ossetia to Georgia (with broad rights) if Georgia turns away from the West towards Moscow, which, in fact, has already begun to happen after the adoption of the law on foreign agents.

Government of Georgia “learned a lesson from this criminal adventure,” this is how Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Mikhail Galuzin comments on the issue of a possible withdrawal of recognition of the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. When asked by a journalist from the Russian Komsomolskaya Pravda whether the “return of Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region to the country (Georgia)”, as Irakli Kobakhidze recently spoke about, could become a reality, the diplomat states that the self-proclaimed republics “made a sovereign choice back in 2008, after the Saakashvili regime attempted to forcefully return one to Georgia and threatened the other with similar actions.”

“As we understand, the Georgian authorities have learned a lesson from this criminal adventure and are aiming to “return” Abkhazia and South Ossetia peacefully. First of all, we are talking about Georgian “reintegration” programs and initiatives, the main one of which is “A Step to a Better Future”. The Abkhazians and South Ossetians have repeatedly expressed their negative attitude to attempts to “blur” their sovereign status and bring them under Georgian jurisdiction, noting that the only “step to a better future” would be recognition of the independence of these countries,” – says Galuzin.

At the same time, the normalization of relations between Tbilisi-Sukhumi-Tskhinvali is possible if the “existing realities” and readiness “to build relations with the republics on the basis of the principles of equality, mutual respect and consideration of each other's interests”continues the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.

“In this regard, the signing of legally binding guarantees of non-use of force between Georgia on the one hand, and Abkhazia and South Ossetia on the other, as well as the resolution of the issue of delimitation of the border between them with subsequent demarcation, is of key importance. All these topics are the subject of discussion within the framework of the International Geneva Discussions on Security and Stability in the Caucasus (IGD)”– said Mikhail Galuzin.
