Weather will change dramatically from today, Monday, August 19. Temperatures are falling, rain and storms will hit almost the entire country, and meteorologists warn that the manifestations of bad weather will be intense. The sudden change in weather was noticed yesterday, Sunday, by residents of northern Greece and the regions of Kilkis, Thessaloniki and Ioannina – there were severe weather phenomena with rain, storms and hail. From Monday, August 19, a number of regions of the country will experience bad weather that will last for three daysuntil Wednesday, August 21.

Meteorologist Thodoris Kolidas explains:

«On Monday We can expect rain and storms, mainly in the afternoon, in the Ionian Sea, Epirus, Macedonia, Thessaly, the western mainland and possibly in the Peloponnese mountains. The phenomena in the northwest will be quite intense.

On Tuesday Unsettled weather will persist, with showers and local storms in the Ionian Sea and on the mainland, mainly in the afternoon. Locally intense manifestations in the Central Ionian region and Northern Greece. The heat will subside and temperatures will fall.

On Wednesday sporadic events in almost all continental areas, but they will not be strong. Further decrease in temperature is expected in the east and south.

Minister of Civil Protection and Climate Change Vassilis Kikilias warns of weather instability and notes that 10 of the 44 fires that broke out today were caused by lightning. He urged people to be on guard in the coming days, as intense thunderstorm activity is expected:

“There were 44 new fires today, at least 10 of which were started by high altitude lightning, making firefighting very difficult. A huge thank you to the firefighters, foresters, volunteers, rangers and local authorities who once again put their hearts into this effort. With intense thunderstorm activity expected in the coming days, we must remain alert.”
