Every second freelancer declares a monthly income of less than 300 euros

An analysis of tax return data filed for 2023 shows that wage earners remain the richest Greeks.

The self-employed are now in 2nd place, mainly because of a change in the way they are taxed, and not because they declared higher incomes, while pensioners' incomes are slightly lower.

The total additional amount left in the pockets of the population (due to the new taxation method) in 2024 compared to 2023 is about 440 million. According to sources in the Ministry of Finance, the results of the audit show that the new self-employment tax law has introduced a fairer tax distribution system and allowed for an expansion of the tax base.

The tax return adjustment this year has resulted in higher incomes for both employees and pensioners, as well as freelancers. However, self-employed people who fall under this presumption reported lower income this year compared to last year, while those who exceeded it reported higher income.

In particular, taxpayers, falling under under this presumption, declared an average annual income of 3,215 euros (268 euros per month). Taxpayers, not falling under under this presumption, declared an average annual income of 15,013 euros (1,251 euros per month).

Based on data obtained from the analysis of income of three main categories (employees, pensioners, self-employed), the average declared income is:

  • For employees: 16,470 euros.
  • For freelancers: 13,901 euros.
  • For pensioners: 13,333 euros.

It is worth noting that the declared income does not cover the current standard of living for the self-employed category, unlike employees and pensioners. The introduction of the new tax regime (τεκμαρτός προσδιορισμός) shows that the average estimated cost of living for entrepreneurs is decreasing, which indicates that the calculated minimum income adequately covers living expenses.
