Teens arrested and fined for arson in southern Athens

Greek police have arrested two teenagers, aged 15 and 16, for setting a fire on a mountainside in the Terpsithea area of Ano Glyfada on Monday afternoon. The schoolchildren set off fireworks “for fun”, they told police.

However, due to the strong wind blowing in the area, the fun of the young idiots turned into a nightmare for the locals. In a matter of minutes the fire spread onto the mountain slope.

Two helicopters were sent to fight the fire, which managed to extinguish the flames within 20 minutes, media reports.

Residents and patrolling volunteers spotted the two teenagers and immediately alerted the police. It was easy to identify them as they were known to locals, and the police detained them late Monday evening. The boys' parents were also detained.

The detainees were first taken to the police station and then handed over to fire department investigators. Each of them was fined 4,600 euros for “arson with intent”but the legal adventures for both them and their parents are not over yet. The parents will be charged with “negligence towards minors.”
