Crete shakes: three earthquakes in a short time

Three earthquakes measuring 4.8, 4.5 and 4.1 on the Richter scale occurred in the south of Crete within a short period of time on Wednesday morning, August 7.

According to the Institute of Geodynamics, one earthquake with a Richter magnitude of 4.1 occurred at 11:22, 19 km south of Mamousa (Heraklion), with a focal depth of 5 km. A second earthquake with a Richter magnitude of 4.8 occurred at 11:23, 6 km east/southeast of Kalo Limeni (Heraklion), with a focal depth of 3.8 km. And a third earthquake with a magnitude of 4.5 occurred at 11:47, 22 km south/southeast of Kalo Limeni, with a focal depth of 5 km. The earthquakes were particularly felt on the island, even on the northern side of Crete.

Renowned seismologist Kostas Papazachos, pointing out that the earthquake did not occur in the Heraklion area, but to the south of Crete (and to the south of Matala), in the marine zone, noted: “Another earthquake of approximately the same intensity occurred recently. There is a series of earthquakes now.” Commenting on the depth of the source, he emphasized: “There have been shallow earthquakes in this area for about two months now.”
