Wife of Greek-Canadian beaten in Crete: "It's a miracle he's alive. We've been to hell, we want justice."

The wife of a Greek-Canadian businessman who became the victim of a brutal beating In Heraklion (Crete), speaking on the central news program, she called for justice and emphasized: “He sees very poorly. It's a miracle that he's still alive. He was between death and life…”.

“The main thing for me is that Emmanuel comes back to life. But they are still at large and have not been arrested two weeks later. I know the police will do what they have to do. “I believe in it,” says the wife of a Greek-Canadian businessman who was brutally beaten in central Heraklion on July 16 for making a remark about a cigarette.

On the one hand, she feels relief because her husband is alive, but on the other hand, she feels anger and fury because those responsible for the beating remain free. “In Canada, where I live, defendants are very quickly brought into the justice system because they pose a threat to society as a whole. I don't think anyone would want to be in our shoes right now because we've been through hell. I can't call them people, we want justice. I love Cretans, and even now, when I leave the hospital, people stop me on the street and say, “Sorry, sorry.” People are almost crying. ““All of Greece is with you.” These words give me strength”,– said the victim's wife.

The Greek-Canadian businessman spent two weeks in hospital, even in intensive care, and underwent two surgeries after suffering a head injury and serious eye damage.

“He is slowly recovering day by day, but full recovery, as we discussed with the doctors, could take a year. His vision is very blurry. It's a miracle he's still alive. He was between death and life…”, said his wife, sending shivers down her spine.

After issuing arrest warrants, authorities are searching for the 31-year-old and 32-year-old men, with two others wanted. They are charged with attempted murder and causing serious bodily harm. The Greek-Canadian's lawyer, Manolis Troulis, has written a sharp letter to the ministers of justice and civil protection asking for immediate action to arrest the men.

«It is incomprehensible that in a modern European state, on an island like Crete, the police cannot find and arrest people for such a wild and brutal crime,” he said.
