4.9 million Greeks took at least one trip in 2023


Greeks of all ages took at least one trip last year for 4.9 million citizens, and 8.3 million trips were made, which is 1.7% and 0.6% more, respectively, than in 2022.

At the same time, the total volume of overnight stays in 2023 amounted to 77.8 million, and expenses amounted to 3,446.8 million euros, which represents a decrease of 2.2% and an increase of 3.6% compared to the 2022 figures, respectively.

According to the results of the study ELSTAT The number of people aged 15 and over who made at least one trip was 4.1 million, an increase of 2.4%, with 6.9 million trips made, a slight decrease of 0.2% compared to 2022 figures. The total number of overnight stays by these persons amounted to 66 million and the expenditure was 3,182.7 million euros, which represents a decrease of 3.8% and an increase of 2.8%, respectively, compared to the 2022 figures.

Of the above trips, 96.6% were made for personal reasons (vacation, health improvement, holidays, visiting relatives and friends) and 3.4% were made for business purposes.

Comparing personal travel data in 2023 to 2022, there is a 1.9% increase in the number of people taking at least one trip, a 0.4% increase in the number of trips, and a 3.1% increase in related spending. However, the number of overnight stays has decreased by 3.3%.

As for people who traveled for personal reasons, the most significant increase in absolute terms compared to 2023 was observed in the 45-64 age group, with a corresponding increase of 4.5%. In these ages, the increase in trips was 4.6%, in spending – 6.2%, and in overnight stays – 2.2%.

The largest number of personal trips were made by land transport (4.7 million trips) and sea transport (1 million trips). When comparing these data with the corresponding data for 2022, the most significant increase in absolute terms was observed in trips by land transport – by 5.8%.

55.5% of citizens who went on vacation independently stayed in non-rented housing, of which 58% stayed in housing provided free of charge by relatives and friends. Trips to non-rented housing account for 72.9% of the total number of overnight stays. Trips to private holiday homes increased by 10.3%, while the corresponding overnight stays decreased slightly, by 0.3%.

For personal trips that included accommodation in rented accommodation (44.5% of personal trips), hotels and similar accommodations were chosen as the main type of accommodation for 62.2%. Trips that included accommodation in hotels and similar accommodations increased by 4.1% and the number of overnight stays increased by 2.3% compared to 2022.
