New video of dangerous rabbitfish captured by swimmers

Scientists and environmentalists have once again warned about poisonous fish that have migrated to the seas around Greece from the Red Sea through the Suez Canal.

Their population is growing rapidly, stresses Mr. Gerasimos Kondylatos, ichthyologist at the Rhodes Hydrobiological Station. The fish is the cause of dozens of deaths due to its toxicity, many poisonings and several amputations. From Crete, Ios, Rhodes, Karpathos, Patras to Cyprus and neighboring Turkey. The toxic rabbit fish has become the “fear and terror” of the seas.

«This is a predatory fish, probably the most famous in the Red Sea. In Greece, there have been a number of attacks on bathers. If someone waves a hand in front of its nose, it is very likely that the rabbit fish will attack, since the finger looks like some kind of prey to it. However, in all the testimonies, bathers tell us that when they saw the fish, they came out of the sea. I think this is the most reasonable reaction. If someone encounters such a fish, it is better to quickly get to the shore, because a bite will most likely lead to amputation or a long-healing problematic wound.“, – says the expert.

This species of sea creature has been in our area since 2005 and its population is currently increasing year after year. We expected (since we are constantly recording this phenomenon) that its numbers would balance out, but so far there is no such trend. The rabbitfish is found in the waters of Rhodes and Crete, as well as in the rest of the Dodecanese, Cyclades and Peloponnese. At the moment, the fish has reached Lefkada.”

Video footage taken by swimmers and then posted on the Internet is worrying.
