Greek climbers climb to inaccessible peak of Indian Himalayas at 6496 meters

Nikolaos Kroupis and Orestis Mitrou, two “modest luminaries of Greek mountaineering” as their fellow athletes describe them, celebrated on social media their conquest of a previously unclimbed peak in the Indian Himalayas.

“Now the summit is conquered! And it was “taken” by the Greeks! Well done Nikos and Orestis! You make us proud. You did not give up and did it! Let your example be an inspiration,” wrote a close friend of the two climbers, rushing to solemnly congratulate and share the global achievement of the two Greek climbers on the Internet.

Communication with the climbers remains difficult. For now, they remain in the Himalayan mountains, having begun their descent and simultaneously making new plans. “We are preparing, perhaps, to conquer another peak… We have nothing planned. We mainly want to explore this area, although there is a problem: special permits are needed because of the border here,” Nikolaos Kroupis tells iefimerida.gr from the snowy peaks.

The mountaineering expedition set out from Greece on July 9 and consisted of two experienced climbers: a member of Trikala Gate tourist group Nikolaos Kroupis and Orestis Mitrou, a member of the Athens tour group. The destination is the Nubra Valley in Ladakh in the Indian Himalayas in Kashmir, the goal is to climb the untouched peak of Nya Kangri at 6,496 m.

Of course, the conquest of the summit was very difficult. The ascent was made using alpine technology, the latest in the world, which minimized human intervention on the mountain by using only the minimum amount of equipment.
