Lightning strikes caused 39 fires in 4.5 hours


The number of agroforestry fires that have broken out across the country in the past 24 hours has reached 62, mainly due to intense thunderstorm activity in various regions of the country, the fire service said in a statement.

Of these, 44 have been eliminated at the initial stage, and 18 fire departments are still fighting. According to the fire service, today from 13:00 to 17:30, due to intense thunderstorm activity, 39 fires broke out in various regions of Greece.

The fire brigade's aircraft are working to extinguish agro-forest fires in the areas of Elassona, Skafi in Kozani, Delphi in Phocis, Vlacherna in Arcadia, on the island of Thassos, in Karpenissi, as well as in five different areas in the Corinth area.

The Fire Service calls on all citizens to be especially vigilant and, in the event of severe weather events, to conscientiously follow the instructions of the competent authorities for their own safety.
