Harris catches up and… takes the lead (video)

In the first national Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted since Biden's campaign ended, US Vice President Kamala Harris led Republican Donald Trump by two percentage points.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll showed the results: Harris got 44% to Trump's 42%.. However the difference is within the margin of statistical error by 3 percentage points.

In the previous Reuters/Ipsos poll on July 15-16, Harris and Trump were both polling at 44%, and earlier this month, the Republican was ahead of the US vice president by one percentage point.

In the latest poll, 56% of registered U.S. voters said Harris, 59, is “intelligent and able to handle challenges,” compared with 49% of Trump, 78, and 22% of Biden, 81.

The poll was conducted on July 22-23, following the Republican National Convention where Trump was officially nominated as a presidential candidate, and after Biden announced that he is leaving the race and supports Harris' candidacy.

Reuters notes that national polls provide important signals about Americans' support for politicians, but the fate of US presidential elections is usually decided in a few key states that traditionally support candidates from different parties.

Kamala Harris is not yet officially a candidate for US President, but has already received the support of the majority of delegates to the Democratic Party Convention. A vote to make her the party's official presidential nominee will take place early next month, ahead of the Democratic convention in Chicago on August 19-22.
