EMY's Emergency Weather Forecast: Thunderstorms After the “Steam Room”

The National Weather Service (EMY) issued an emergency weather bulletin on Wednesday morning (24/7) as thunderstorms, strong gusts of wind and local hail are expected in the coming hours:

Wednesday 24/07/24 in the afternoon and evening in western Macedonia, central Macedonia (including Thessaloniki prefecture) and Thessaly.

Thursday 25/07/24

• from early morning until midday in central Macedonia (including Thessaloniki Prefecture) and eastern Macedonia (including Thassos).
• from midday to evening in Thrace (including Samothrace)
• from morning until midday in the Sporades and northern Evia.

FORECAST FOR WEDNESDAY 24-07-2024

Cloudy skies across Greece, except in Macedonia, where localized showers and thunderstorms have already begun in the north. Clouds are gathering over the rest of the continent from midday, bringing rain and sporadic storms with stronger effects in eastern parts of Central Greece. The likelihood of hail is increasing.

The air temperature will fluctuate in Western Macedonia from 18 to 33°C, in the rest of northern Greece from 22 to 35-37°C, in Thessaly from 23 to 37-38°C, in Epirus from 22 to 35-36°C, in the rest of the continental parts from 24 to 36-38°C and, possibly, locally 39°C, on the Eptanisia islands from 23 to 36°C, on the eastern Aegean islands from 24 to 35-36°C, in the rest of the island parts of the Aegean Sea and on Crete from 24 to 33-35°C.

In the seas, north-westerly winds will blow with a force of 4-5 on the Beaufort scale, and locally in the South Aegean Sea – 6 on the Beaufort scale.

Attica will see scattered clouds that will become denser from midday, with the possibility of occasional rain in the north and mountains of the prefecture. Winds will blow from the north, with a force of 3-4 on the Beaufort scale. Temperatures will range from 29 to 37°C.

In Thessaloniki, light cloud cover is expected, which will thicken in the afternoon, as well as short-term rains or thunderstorms, mainly in the mountains. The wind will blow mainly from the south, with an intensity of 2-3 points on the Beaufort scale. The air temperature will fluctuate between 28 and 34°C.

FORECAST FOR THURSDAY 25-07-2024
In eastern Macedonia, Thrace and gradually in central and western Macedonia increasing cloudiness with local rains, and from midday sporadic thunderstorms. In the rest of the country initially generally clear weather, but from midday on the rest of the mainland, Euboea and the northern Aegean Sea clouds will appear, local rains and sporadic thunderstorms. Intense phenomena are possible in Thrace, eastern and central Macedonia. Improvement in the evening.

The wind will be northerly, from 3 to 5, and in some places at sea 6 points on the Beaufort scale. Almost all over the country the temperature will drop a little more and will be close to the norm for this season. In the north of the mainland it will be 33-35°C, in the rest of the mainland and islands – 35-37°C.

FORECAST FOR FRIDAY 26-07-2024
In central and eastern Macedonia partly cloudy, with occasional showers and thunderstorms, improving in the evening. In the rest of the country, the weather is generally clear, but in the midday hours there will be occasional clouds on the mainland, and local rain in the east. Northwest wind, in the Ionian Sea from 4 to 6 and in places 7 on the Beaufort scale, weakening late in the evening, and in other areas from 3 to 5 points and in the Aegean Sea in places 6 points on the Beaufort scale.
The temperature will not change significantly.

FORECAST FOR SATURDAY 27-07-2024
In general, clear weather with some clouds on the mainland, local rain is possible in the mountains at midday. The wind will blow from the north on the mainland and in the Ionian Sea from 3 to 5 points, and in the Aegean Sea, first from 4 to 6 and gradually locally up to 7 points. The temperature will rise slightly, mainly in the north.
