US Secretary of State Candidate: Nord Stream 2 Was One of the Causes of War in Ukraine

One of the presidential candidate's allies, Richard Grenell, who is considered a contender for the post of Secretary of State, gave an interview to BILD in which he stated that the Ukrainian conflict is “in Europe's backyard.” And if the war were in Mexico, the US “would be doing most of the work” itself and would certainly “not be asking the Germans for help.”

At the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, BILD Deputy Editor-in-Chief Paul Ronzheimer interviewed Richard Grenell. He was the US ambassador to Berlin from 2018 to 2020, and then briefly headed US intelligence. He is considered one of Donald Trump's closest associates and a likely candidate for US Secretary of State if the Republican wins the election.

His main points are:

• “Europe is at war. When Trump was [президентом]Europe was not at war. <..> Under Trump, NATO was much stronger.”
• “The successful governments are those that take care of their people. Germany should use the principle of Germany First. <..> I love Germans. I have many German friends. The problem is the German government. I think the German government does not listen to the people. Germany has the potential to become Donald Trump's favorite country.”
• “Biden hasn't spoken to him once in three years [Путиным]”I think that communicating with people is a tactic. It's not a goal, it's not a solution, but it gets us there.”
• “She [война в Украине] in your backyard. If there was a war in Mexico, we would be doing most of the work, if not all of it. And we certainly wouldn't be asking the Germans for help if there was a war in Mexico.”
• “The German government has handled Donald Trump's policies terribly wrong. <..> Today I can say that Nord Stream 2 was one of the reasons why there is war in Ukraine. The German government did not listen to Donald Trump. I would like an apology for that.”
